THE JOHN GLENN SQUADRON

Patuxent River, Maryland

We foster and encourage the relationship between Marine Corps aviation, the Naval Aviation Acquisition and Test communities, our industry partners, and the local community.

 

A 501(c)(3) veterans' organization, our squadron was chartered by the Marine Corps Aviation Association (MCAA) National (www.flymcaa.org) on January 28th, 2005 at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland.

AWARDS

We recognize excellence in Marine Corps Aviation Acquisition and Test communities through our Test Pilot/NFO, Acquisiton Officer, and Acquisition SNCO-of-the-Year Awards.

SCHOLARSHIPS

We award merit based scholarships

to high achieving Tri-County area high school seniors and dependents of John Glenn Squadron members who plan to pursue a college degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.

 

EVENTS

The John Glenn Squadron hosts various events throughout the year including spring and fall mixers, panel discussions, CoC event, and other activities. Our signature fundraiser, the Annual Orbital Golf Classic, raises funds for our awards and scholarship programs.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The MCAA John Glenn Squadron, located at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, annually presents the awards to recognize Marines who have exemplified themselves through the most significant contribution to, or professional achievement in the field of Marine aviation acquisition during the preceding calendar year.

ABOUT JOHN GLENN

 

John Herschel Glenn, Jr. (born July 18, 1921), (Col, USMC, Ret.), is a former U.S. Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut and United States senator. He was selected as one of the "Mercury Seven" group of military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA to become America's first astronauts and fly the Project Mercury spacecraft.

 

In 1962, Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth and the fifth person in space. Glenn received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990. 

 

He retired from the Marine Corps in 1965 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974 and served through January 3, 1999. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
